I am writing in response to Tavleen Singh’s article ‘The FM is in denial’ (September 19). Is it not unfortunate that while we boast of a vibrant and dynamic democracy, we have failed to evolve a uniform and long-term policy on socio-economic development? On the one hand we have made long strides in science and technology and urbanisation, but our rural life is backward and deprived. While our coffers are overflowing with foodgrains, people are dying of hunger. It is shameful that our political leadership should make ‘kulhars’ and ‘saffronisation of education’ issues and go all out on air fares and mobile rates while a majority of Indians have no road and nothing in the way of a communication system.

The concern expressed by PM Manmohan Singh and Chief Justice of India R C Lahoti at the lack of standards and corruption prevailing at every level is welcome (‘Objection your lordships, says Prime Minister’, Sept 19). The non-enforcement of the Advocates Act is the principle reason for the judicial mess. If the lawyers pleading for adjournments and judges granting stay orders were to be made to pay for the time and cost overruns, the unmanageable pendency of cases in Indian courts could have been checked.

I enjoy reading Pamela Philipose’s columns. Her humour is clean and delectable. ‘I am Bill’s heart (September 12)’ was really tickling. What is most pleasing is that she means no harm. I am sure even Clinton would have enjoyed the column, if he came across it.
