Everton director Paul Gregg said on Tuesday it was 8216;8216;incredibly sad8217;8217; that the club are having to contemplate selling 18-year-old Wayne Rooney.

Gregg told BBC8217;s Radio Five Live that Everton have offered the young England international a five-year, 50,000 pounds 92,780-a-week contract in a bid to keep him at Goodison Park but is worried that other clubs will prise him away.

Gregg said: 8216;8216;I think it8217;s incredibly sad at the moment that we are actually contemplating selling Wayne Rooney. I wish we could persuade Wayne to stay, we8217;d like to see him stay. He8217;s a big ambassador for Everton Football Club and it8217;s sad that other forces make decisions for us.8217;8217;
