MUMBAI, MARCH 16: The 54th Annual Horse Show and Polo Tournament, the much awaited event in equestrian circles gets under way at the Mahalakshmi Race Course. The event being jointly organised by the Amateur Rider's Club (ARC) and army Headquarters of Maharashtra and Gujarat is expected to draw competitors from all over the country for the equestrian and polo tournaments. Apart from these, competitions in show jumping, dressage and tent pegging will also be held.Show jumping will involve the horse and rider negotiating the jumps and obstacles in a special sequence. The event will be held in the intermediate and novice levels depending on the competence and class of the horses.The training of a horse and it's response to the controls or aids of the rider will be tested in the Dressage events. Tent pegging involves uprooting wooden pegs with a lance as the horse gallops. Each rider is given four runs and the maximum aggregate points accumulated decides the winner. This will be an individual as well as teamevent.Polo, however, will be the main attraction here with the following tournaments to be played this year viz; Willingdon Cup (final on Mar 20), Indian Navy Polo Stick (Mar 29), Thimayya Cup (April 16) and Southern Command Cup (Mar 27).
