The England and Wales Cricket Board ECB on Wednesday severed all bilateral ties with Zimbabwe8217;s cricket authorities after British Prime Minister Gordon Brown insisted the team should be banned from entering the country.

The announcements ahead of next summer8217;s Twenty20 World Cup here and tour matches against England echoed Cricket South Africa8217;s imposition of sporting sanctions, following recent violence in the African nation. 8220;The ECB deplores the position in Zimbabwe and, like Cricket South Africa, finds this untenable,8221; a statement said. 8220;Therefore all bilateral arrangements are suspended with Zimbabwe Cricket with immediate effect8230;8221;

8220;We welcome the government8217;s decision and share the government8217;s concerns about the deteriorating situation and lack of human rights in Zimbabwe.8221;

Zimbabwe8217;s eligibility to compete in next June8217;s Twenty20 tournament will be determined next Wednesday when the ICC8217;s executive board meets in Dubai.

Flower calls for suspension

Meanwhile, former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower has welcomed suggestions the troubled African state could be suspended from international cricket following South Africa8217;s decision to freeze ties with its neighbour.

8220;Things are spiraling out of control so quickly in Zimbabwe now,8221; Flower said. 8220;I hope someone does something to arrest that. If suspending Zimbabwe from the ICC is the first step then that8217;s good.

8220;I support a suspension. We should not have normal relations with a country in such an abnormal state. I don8217;t think they should play in England next year on either the tour or in the World Twenty20,8221; he added.
