SOFIA, April 20: Donna Kellogg, the youngest member of the team, was the heroine as England won through to the final of the European Team Championship badminton title for the first time in 12 years today.
The 20-year-old student partnered Joanne Goode to a 15-7 15-6 victory over Catrine Bengtsson and Par-Gunnar Jonsson in the deciding women’s doubles rubber to secure a 3-2 win over Sweden. England will meet defending champions Denmark in the final tonight.
The Danes can call on World champion Peter Rasmussen, Olympic champion Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen and world No 2 Peter Gade Christensen, and remain clear favourites to lift the trophy for a record seventh time.
They completed the three ties in the round-robin series without dropping a game against the Netherlands, the Ukraine or Russia.
pEngland, bronze medallists two years ago, were handicapped by the loss of the 1988 European individual champion Darren Hall due to a groin injury. He hopes to be fit for the start of the individual events onTuesday.
The Swedes, beaten finalists in 1996, captured both singles with Tomas Johansson beating Hall’s substitute Colin Haughton 15-4 5-3. Margit Borg easily dismissed Julia Mann 11-1 11-0. But the English doubles pairs all came good.
In the bronze medal play-off, Sweden face the Netherlands. Scotland, who lost a lost match 3-2 to Germany, and Russia will meet in the Division One relegation decider.
