January 1: Eight drug traffickers including four Tanzanian nationals were recently convicted in two different cases by the NDPS court of sessions for ten years each and a fine of Rs one lakh each. In the first case, Mwinyi Khamis Suleiman (29), Ali Mohammed Juma (26), Mohammed Salim Awadh (29), Annastacio Benjamin Masanja (38) and three Indians Amar Jawaharmal Makhija (60), Mohammed Rafique Abdul Hanif Shaikh (31) and Sardar Mohammed Shaikh alias Batli (40) were arrested by the Narcotics Cell near Richardson and Crudas Limited at JJ for possessing 160 grams heroin worth Rs 32,000 on May 13, 1996.

In the second case one, Ramesh alias Badu Dagdu Medge (27) was caught with 45 grams heroin near Halao pool, Kurla West on March 7, 1997.
