NEW DELHI, December 21: The driver of the tempo which knocked down a policeman and nearly mowed down dozens of devotees offering Namaz on the road next to the Sunehri Masjid in the Kotwali area last night was today handed over the police. The first Roza of this year8217;s Ramzan formally began at 7.30 p.m. yesterday.

Shiv Sahay Singh has been charged with attempted murder and negligent driving while Imam Maulana Mohammed Kasim, who didn8217;t hand him over to the authorities in the immediate aftermath of the incident, faces prosecution for obstructing police duty.

According to the police, the inebriated driver was on his way from Shanti Van to Chawri Bazar to recieve a consignment of goods when constable Arun Kumar tried flagging him down at a barricade sealing off the road during the Namaz period.

After crashing through it and realising he had injured a cop, the tempo driver apparently panicked and tried to speed away, unaware that the Namazis had congregated on the street ahead. In the process, the vehicle reportedly hit another makeshift barricade and the deafening noise made the Namazis occupying that end of the street move off just in time.

Eventually, some men managed to climb onto the vehicle and bring it to a halt, following which the angry mob roughed up the driver and set the tempo on fire. It reportedly took the Imam8217;s intervention and the reinforcement of police personnel from adjoining areas for the crowd to calm down and resume their interrupted prayers.

Arun Kumar, who is said to have sustained serious head injuries, is presently under medical observation at the Jai Prakash Narain hospital.
