NEW DELHI, OCT 5: Never mind if the government has asked every ministry and department to cut costs. The Department of Telecommunications DoT plans its annual jaunt to the International Telecoms Union ITU show in Geneva starting later this week from October 9. The Indian delegation will consist of around 13 to 14 officials from the ministry apart from another 32 officials from the four public sector under the ministry 8212; Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd MTNL, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd VSNL, Telecom Consultants India Ltd TCIL and Hindustan Teleprinters Ltd HTL.

On August 5, the finance ministry had issued a directive to all central ministries and government departments to tighten their belts and cut expenditure. The ministry had ordered banning of all foreign travel 8220;unless absolutely unavoidable8221;.

The ITU holds this conference every year in developing countries and once every four years in Geneva. The Geneva event is supposed to be the mother of all international Telecom shows. This year, theattraction is expected to be wireless internet.

The delegation will be led by N K Singh, secretary in the Prime Minister8217;s Office PMO, telecom secretary Anil Kumar, Tecom Commission members N K Sinha and P S Saran, deputy director generals from the DoT Dilip Sahai, N Mokhariwale, Prakash Narain, I R Bharadwaj, N Parameshwaran, B B Singh, N P Singh, and two chief general managers of DoT circles in Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. Chairmen of the three PSUs will also be part of the Indian delegation.

Apart from this, around 16 officials from MTNL and another dozen from TCIL will also take part in the week-long ITU exhibition which showcases the latest technology in telecoms. In fact TCIL is in-charge of erecting and setting up the Indian Pavilion which will also have a few private India companies participating.
