Ever heard of cricket umpires doubling up as paramedics? Well, in a fortnight8217;s time, Bengal cricket will soon see a number of umpires taking to the field equipped with the precious life-saving technique 8212; the CPR.

As part of the novel move being tried out for the first time in Bengal cricket, the top umpires enlisted with the Cricket Association of Bengal CAB will undergo a detailed session with Kolkata-based sports medicine doctor Shanti Ranjan Dasgupta. The life-saving education drive has been initiated in the backdrop of the tragic death of Dempo footballer Cristiano de Lima Junior during last year8217;s Federation Cup in Bangalore.

Speaking to The Indian Express here, the doctor said that it was necessary to educate umpires on the CPR technique since they are the first officials present on the scene in the event of an accident during a cricket match.

8220;Junior8217;s collision death last year has thrown up a big question that the sports fraternity has been ignoring for all these years 8212; the issue of saving the situation when a player has a blackout or temporary heart-stop due to an accident. So, it is time that cricket umpires too learnt the CPR technique before a catastrophe like that of Junior strike in cricket,8221; Dr Dasgupta said.

The session will be attended by about 30 CAB umpires and conducted in two parts.
