OCTOBER 10: Central Railway suburban and long-distance services were severely affected on Saturday through Sunday evening following the derailment of two coaches of a Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-bound local at Badlapur on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at 10.30 pm when two forward coaches, including the motorman8217;s coach, of the 8 Up Khopoli local slid off the rails near Badlapur station, some 67 km from CST. Passengers escaped unhurt while the motorman NB Matkar sustained slight injuries.

Fifty-nine suburban railway trains, including fourteen on the harbour line, were cancelled on Sunday while trains ran only till Ambernath this morning.All trains to and from Pune were cancelled on Sunday. These included the Indrayani, Deccan Queen, Shatabdi, Simhagad, Pragati, Pune-Karjat shuttle and the Pune-CST passenger. Long-distance trains like the 6529 Udayan Express and Koyna Express were diverted.

Traffic on the down track which had been blocked for repair work was restored at around 4.20 pm whilenormal traffic on the Up track was restored at around 6.50 pm. The Central Railway ran special trains between Vangani and Karjat to evacuate stranded passengers.
