MARGAO, FEB 12: Goa (Dempo) put up a dazzling display to get past favourite East Bengal 2-0 and register their first victory and full points in the Fourth Coca-Cola National Football League (NFL) match played at the Nehru Stadium on Saturday.
Both goals came in the first half in the 27th minute through striker Mohammad Reza and in the 36th minute through medio Edwin Fernandes.
With this win, after five drawn matches, bottom-placed Dempo moved into the 11th place with a tally of eight points, pushing BSF (six points) to the bottom. East Bengal remained with 14 points.
Dempo struck in the 27th minute when Soltanbadi sent in a cross. The ball touched Ranjan Dey’s leg and went to Mohammad Reza, who shot home (1-0). Dempo increased their lead in the 36th minute through medio Edwin Fernandes. Johnny D’Souza passed to Edwin, whose shot from the top of the box found the target (2-0).
Five minutes before the breather, East Bengal could have reduced the margin. But Jackson Agaypong’s powerful shot was brilliantly fisted over by Dempo goalkeeper Vikrant Sharma.
Dempo sustained their upperhand in the second session but did not translate it into goals. The second half also witnessed some rough play with East Bengal goalkeeper Prashanta Dora, Willie Brawn and Dinesh shown yellow cards by the referee.
