Man of the Match Nicholau Borges scored in each half as Dempo Sports Club humbled Mohun Bagan 2-0 in the fifth round of the ONGC I-League at the Nehru stadium here today.
After their fourth victory, Dempo continued to lead the table with 13 points from five matches. Mohun Bagan, who lost their third match, remained on four points.
Dempo started in right earnest with short passes and Brazilian Roberto Mendes Silva sounded the first warning with a power-packed shot from the top of the box which hit the upright and rebounded into play.
Dempo took the lead in the 15th minute. A move down the right flank saw Anthony Pereira sending a deep cross into the box for unmarked Borges, who hammered it in.
They doubled the lead in the 71st minute. Defender Valeriano Rebello sent a cross for Edeh Chidi into the box and Bagan keeper Shilton Paul charged out to intercept it but failed. The ball went to the unmarked Borges who made no mistake.
Mohun Bagan stars Jose Ramirez Baretto and Bhaichung Bhutia could not convert the chances that came their way.
Tomorrow, a keen tussle is on the cards when Durand cup champions Churchill Brothers will take on Federation Cup winners East Bengal here,
In Mumbai, local outfit Air India and JCT played out an uninspiring, goalless draw in the fifth round at the Cooperage today.
Air India dominated the first half, while JCT missed their mercurial striker Eduardo da Silva who was rested.
There were more bookings by referee Francisco Fernandes than goalmouth action or even attractive midfield play with both the teams lacking the requisite firepower up front to break open the rival defence.
