8226;The edit 8216;Spotthe difference8217; was on target. It is unfortunate that, despite benefiting from the democratic framework of our country, the CPM doesn8217;t yet appreciate the value of democracy. You have rightly noted that 8220;While China8217;s belligerent project in Tibet hinges on complete assimilation by the Han Chinese, India can survive difference, and thrives precisely because it allows democratic pluralism.8221; Extermination or assimilation is the solution offered by many societies and throughout history.

The Indian way has been to harmonise. Democratic pluralism has always marked the Indian way of life. That is the reason why democracy has been so successful in India in spite of poverty and illiteracy.

Wise moves

8226;Seema Chishti8217;s 8216;A visit from a daughter8217; was a reasonable assessment of the one truly touching recent incident. To not allow the sublimation of abominable crimes and yet to unravel the psychological motivation behind a criminal act is wise. Thus Priyanka Gandhi8217;s visit to Nalini Sriharan was historic and thought provoking. Even in the present liberal era, the destructive subculture of retaliation is yet to be proscribed. But such a proscription is necessary to psychologically and spiritually uplift society.

Conspiracy theory

8226; This refers to the editorial 8216;In the sunlight8217;. As we all know, the RTI Act provides the public access to information regarding government action and records on a variety of issues affecting them individually or collectively. Thus, it is obvious that the RTI Act serves the people in a big way, and at times embarrasses the government. So people are quite satisfied with the act. Therefore, the government8217;s decision to audit the RTI Act8217;s achievements smells of conspiracy. Perhaps this is an attempt to bury the act or at least make it toothless. Your call for everybody to be vigilant against any possible rollback of the act is timely and appropriate. Citizen fora and the media should support the RTI activists.

Motley crew

8226;At the moment, the IPL seems to be a dream come true for everyone 8212; players, owners, sponsors, film stars, company managers, the media and the public. With up to 24 players and officials in each of the eight squads, including the reserves, a total of 192 players and their officials are going to get a lot richer by the end of six weeks. It appears that the IPL unites all concerned. However, one wonders how long this unity will last. A mere 45 days?
