Oropesa (Spain), october 24 : Deep Sen Gupta and Koneru Humpy bagged the gold medal in the boys under-12 and girls under-14 categories respectively in the World Youth chess festival.
However, Harika missed a golden opportunity and had to be content with a silver.
Deep had a higher progressive tie break score over Brkic Ante of Croatia when they entered the last round with 8 points each. Deep played a marvelous last round game against Kjartansson to win convincingly. However Brkic was held to a draw by Rauf Mamedev of Azerbaijan. Thus Deep, who hails from Chakradharpur in Bihar, won the World U-12 boys championship.
He is the fifth Indian to win a World chess title after Anand (World junior 1987), Harikrishna (World U-10, 1996), Humpy (World U-10, 1997, U-12 1998) and Aarthie Ramaswamy (World U-18 girls 1999).
