AMRITSAR, Oct 14: The decks have been cleared for setting up dream city 8220;New Amritsar8221; with Amritsar Improvement Trust getting physical possession of land today after a year long stalemate between the trust and land acquisition authorities.

The prestigious New Amritsar project proposed to be developed on Amritsar-Jalandhar stretch of the GT Road short of Attari bypass was under shadow of uncertainty owing to paucity of funds with the Improvement Trust and rigid stand taken by land acquisition office LAO for making full and final payment to the land owners.

The trust had invited applications for allotment of residential plots in the new city in December 1997 for the first phase of 340 acres. The second phase spread over about 275 acres had also been notified on January 16, 1998 but its fate also hangs in balance.

S S Rajput, chairman of the Improvement Trust told The Indian Express that main hurdle in development of New Amritsar had been cleared as they have received the possession from the LAO. He said 80 per cent of total award money of Rs 67 crore had been deposited. He said that trust had taken a loan of Rs 2.34 crore to meet the demand raised by the LAO.

Rajput said that they were planning to hold draw of lots for plots in New Amritsar very soon. He said the funds collected as earnest money would be utilised to develop the New Amritsar city. He said the trust had planned to provide all sort of modern facilities and basic amenities like entertainment parks, educational institutes beside a cosy environment.

The chairman said that they were planning to get a loan of Rs 70 crore from HUDCO to finance the second phase of project. He hoped that city would be developed at a fast pace.
