
PANCHKULA, Feb 19: A 65-year old woman was deprived of her gold ornaments, reportedly at knife-point, by a young couple in broad day light in Sector 16 of the township yesterday afternoon. The victim, Asha Chhabra was proceeding on foot to a relative8217;s house in the same sector, when a man approached her near the Saint Soldier School and asked for directions. Asha estimated that he was in his early thirties.
As she was talking to the man, another woman about the same age, approached them and quot;fell at the man8217;s feet, proclaiming him to be some great guruquot;.
Asha said that the woman engaged her in a conversation and began to highlight the quot;guru8217;squot; greatness. The woman told her that he could give her valuable astrological advice.
While talking, the couple steered Asha towards a bylane and then brandishing a knife, ordered her to remove all her ornaments. Asha said that they threatened to kill her if she made any noise.
Asha8217;s daughter-in-law, Pinky Chhabra said when her mother-in-law returned home, they scouted the area in search of the couple, but there was no trace of them. She added that four gold bangles, ear-rings, rings and a chain all worth about Rs 50,000, had been stolen.
The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. No arrests have been made so far.
Meanwhile, in another case, police have booked a Sector 4 couple for defrauding Lakhwinder Singh of Rs 15 lakh. Police sources said that Lakhwinder Singh, who was earlier residing in the same sector, had gone abroad and was sending money in installments to Subhash Bansal and his wife Ameeta to get his house constructed in Sector 2.
However, while the money was being received by the accused, no construction, as per the agreement, was being carried out.
