VADODARA, July 7: Pop artist Daler Mehandi will perform in the city on July 11 in aid of cyclone victims of Jamnagar, Kutch and Kandla. Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma and District Collector Anil J Mukim told reporters on Saturday that they expected to raise Rs 1 crore in addition of nearly Rs 3.25 crore already contributed by the district to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

Mehandi, who is reported to be booked till December 1999, has decided to perform free, they added. Organised by the collectorate and the police, the show will be at Golden Circus premises on the Rajmahal ground. Mukim said as Mahatma Gandhi Nagargruh sits less than 1,000 and water-proof arrangement for a large gathering at short notice was not possible, they decided to hold the show in the Circus premises.

It was Sharma’s idea to hold the show in the circus pandal, Mukim said, adding the circus organiser had agreed to give the enclosure a day in advance for preparations and the organisers will compensate for the days the circus will remain closed.

Nearly 3,000 people are expected to attend and donors passes would be available at the collectorate, the police commissioner’s office, mamlatdar’s office and office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) for Rs 10,000, Rs 5,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000.

Both said the public and private sector undertakings, voluntary organisations and individuals had extended support and urged everyone to attend the show.

Sharma said they planned to rope in television artists, but the names were not yet finalised. He also informed that Vadodara policemen had donated around Rs 5 lakh from a day’s salary.
