PALAMPUR, Sept 7: The daily paid labourers numbering more than 300, who were on an indefinite strike for the last five days at Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University HPAU here, have called off their agitation after amicable negotiations and assurances. Vice-Chancellor Prof P.K. Khosla presented a glass of juice to the workers sitting on chain hunger strike.
The administration agreed to issue appointment orders forthwith to 10 appointees for the posts of clerks for which interviews were held about six month ago.
The other major demand of regularising of daily wagers who have put in 10 years of service has also been conceded, but the case would be presented to the Board of Management for final approval.
The cases of those daily wagers who have break in their service period would also be processed for sympathetic consideration subject to the approval of the Board of Management.
The university is also keen to absorb laboratory assistants from among the daily wagers so that a larger chunk of the workers get benefit and are regularised with the approval of finance committee and the management board.
The issue of employment to one of the family members of a daily wager who dies in office would be considered on compassionate grounds on individual merit, but the scheme would not be adopted as a policy, P.K. Kholsa told ENS.
