
CHANDIGARH, May 3: The Beant Singh assassination trial resumed today in the court of UT District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bedi.
Gurdev Chand, Inspector, Customs and Central Excise, presently posted at Jammu, today deposed before the court. He said on September 5, 1995, he was directed by his officer to go to the CBI office. Another inspector, Satpal, was also directed to join him. They went to the CBI office in a jeep where they were introduced to the officer concerned.
They were then asked to take another jeep in which they went to Patiala where Balwant Singh used to live. On reaching Patiala, they went to the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police, and then headed for the house of Jasbir Singh where the accused, Balwant Singh, was a tenant. They stood outside the house for some time and saw SHO Tripdi coming with Jasbir Singh. Thereafter, they all went to Balwant8217;s room and entered it after breaking open the lock.
Some of the items recovered from the room, including some cassettes, calendars, newspapers etc, were taken into possession and the list was signed by the witness along with others. After conducting the search they came back to Chandigarh. Cross examination of the accused was also held today. Evidence in the case will continue tomorrow.
