CAPE TOWN, March 19: Daryll Cullinan resurrected his faltering Test career with a sparkling century as South Africa scored 298 for six on the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at Newlands today.
Cullinan, who had not reached 50 in his previous eight Tests, hit 113 off 160 balls. He was associated in successive partnerships of 95 with Gary Kirsten and 96 with Hansie Cronje, both scoring at better than a run-a-minute.
Skipper Cronje8217;s dismissal for 49 signalled the start of a good fightback by the Sri Lankans, with Jacques Kallis out for three and Cullinan followed soon after he was bowled by Pramodaya Wickramasinghe 2-50.
Cullinan was dropped at second slip by Roshan Mahanama off Vaas before he had scored. He took advantage of the let-off by playing some aggressive strokes, particularly against Lankan dangerman, Muttiah Muralitharan 2-88. He hit the off-spinner for a four and a six over mid-wicket off successive balls in the first over after lunch.
