Do Puneites know what to do if caught in a Mumbai-like situation?
It8217;s been more than a week since the dastardly attack on Mumbai shook the city and shocked the nation. With the railway station and top hotels being the targets, the fallout is a feeling that no place is safe anymore. We asked some Puneites what they would do if , God forbid, they were caught in the crosshairs of a terror strike or hostage crisis? Have they learnt some lessons from what happened in next door Mumbai? Do they know which authorities to call in such a situation? Do they have the latest contact numbers of emergency services? Do they have an idea of what to do and what not to do in the event of a crisis?
Girish Sarode, Insurance Adviser, Bajaj Allianz
My first priority would be to help out those in need, in whatever manner possible. Those injured, especially women and children, will be of the utmost concern for me. I have all the emergency numbers stored in my cellphone. I8217;ll immediately inform the authorities about the incident, so that more people don8217;t venture that way. Many lives can be saved if the police is alerted on time.
Shobha Pawar, Customer Care Manager
The first thing I8217;ll do is inform my family members, but only those who are strong enough to take the news well. Then, of course, I8217;ll think of getting out of such a situation alive and well and also help others over there. I don8217;t have numbers of emergency services with me but I8217;m going to store them soon.
Varna Honnawar, Student
The first thing I8217;ll do is move away from places of high risk such as windows or inflammable materials. Then, I have some friends in the police service whom I8217;d inform about the attack/crisis situation. I8217;m think about my own safety after everyone else around me is secure. So, I8217;ll make sure others with me are safe first and then see how best to get out of the place.
Sanand Mitra, Entrepreneur
The first thing that I8217;ll do is to rescue those stuck in the crisis situation. My priority will be to escort the elderly and children to safety and then think of how best to handle the situation vis-agrave;-vis myself. I8217;ll obviously inform the authorities concerned about the details of the crisis, as I8217;ve got the emergency numbers saved in my cellphone as well as memorized.
Deepak Guggari, Architect
The most important thing is to keep my presence of mind and not panic in such a situation. First, I8217;ll intimate my friends and family and urge them not to get hassled about my well-being. Then, of course, I8217;ll inform the police and ambulance services and alert them to face an impending crisis situation. But to me, what is most important is to keep my cool and not do anything which might endanger my safety.
Navin Singh, Marketing professional
I8217;ll be honest with you 8211; I don8217;t want to be a hero. I just want to come out of it alive 8211; if ever I have to face such an incident. I know it8217;s politically incorrect to say this, but my first reaction will be to get out and quick. I8217;ll prefer not to inform my family, as they8217;ll panic and it8217;ll only add to my trauma. I8217;ll inform the police and fire brigade but only after ensuring my safety first.
Police advice
Rajendra Sonawane, Joint Commisioner of Police, Pune gives advice on what to do in a crisis:
The first thing a person must to is to find a safe place for himself or herself. If it is a group one person must take the lead and guide others to get out of the situation.
Remember not to panic and handle the situation according to whatever options are available.
In case of non-confirmation call the police control room 100 first. It could be a rumour or a hoax.
In case of a rumour, report to the police about people spreading such news.
Do not take any action yourself in case when dealing with any gadget. The public is not equipped with all the tools required to deactivate a bomb and may inadvertenetly set it off. Let the police and the authorities come in.
Although people react differently in different situations, keep your cool and try to evacuate yourself as soon as possible.
Do not crowd around such a place it creates difficulty for everyone, the police and the people.
