CHANDIGARH, Nov 30: The local cricketing fraternity has come down heavily on the Chandigarh Administration’s decision to hold the proposed star nite, Chandigarh Carnival, on December 4 and 5 at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here.
In a signed letter, the city cricketers and cricket lovers led by the former India player Yograj Singh, have urged the Chandigarh Administration to shift the venue from the Stadium as "by holding such an event there, the basic concept of sports activity, particularly cricket will be spoiled for days together".
They allege that the ground will be beyond repair after the event. "After a long time the outfield of the stadium has been brought to some shape and with barracks scaffolding various stages of the carnival, the stadium will be in irreparable loss," read the letter. "Also, the period of December and January is the ideal time of cricket. With the holding of this show, the cricket activity may come to a standstill for some time atleast," it further said.
Incidentally, a schools tournament was scheduled to begin in the stadium from the first week of December.
They have also reminded the administration that the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, while adressing an election rally in Ludhiana’s Government College cricket ground had promised that in future no other activity apart from sports will be held in such stadiums. They alleged that the administration has thus ignored the PM’s assurance.
