VADODARA, SEPT 7: It was for the first time that policemen deployed on election duty were paid like their counterparts from other departments. The policemen, according to District Superintendent of Police Vivek Srivastava, were paid as per the Election Commission of India8217;s directions. The payments were made not by the police department, but by the assistant returning officers of respective constituencies on the spot.
All the cops, from sub-inspector level down to the constabulary, were paid. Inspectors and those above them were not entitled to compensation, according to a ECI directive pertaining to remuneration.
While cops deployed at the polling booths were paid at a flat rate of Rs 100 on the first day and Rs 40 on the second day for escorting ballot boxes upto the counting centres, those on patrol duty were paid Rs 75 per day.
However, they will now not be entitled to travelling and dearness allowances which they earlier claimed from the department during election duty. But the policemen were happy because the amount was paid in cash while the payment of TA/DA from the department usually involves delays.
The deployment of cops at the strong rooms storing ballot boxes would not be considered election duty but routine work, and no extra payment would be made for it.
