Man sustains bullet injury, another caught by guards amid theft attempt at Vadodara GETCO substation; probe on

A N Patel, Superintendent Engineer, GETCO, said thieves often try to enter the premises of the substation in Karjan to steal items made of copper and other materials.

UT Finance Secretary Diprava Lakra said, "Any new project which requires analysis or financial analysis will be sent to the ministry for appraisal and approval. However, any minor repair works can go on. Those will not suffer."The SP said the Karjan police have launched a search for the suspects who escaped and also began verifying the documents of the security guard.

The Vadodara district police Saturday began investigating an incident in which a man was allegedly shot in the leg by an armed guard of the substation of Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO) in Karjan while attempting theft in the early hours of Saturday. The police said a gang of about five people tried to break into the facility of the electrical power transmission company and pelted stones at the guards.

The injured man, identified as Vijay Khatri, 24, who is suspected to be part of the gang that broke into the GETCO substation premises in Karjan, was rushed to SSG Hospital for treatment, while another of the suspected thieves was caught by the security personnel and handed over to the police. Around three other men managed to escape, officers said.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sushil Agrawal, Superintendent of Police (SP), Vadodara, said, “The incident occurred on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday when a gang of thieves attempted to break into the premises of the Gujarat Electricity Board in Karjan… The armed security guard is said to have fired in self-defence.”

The SP said the Karjan police have launched a search for the suspects who escaped and also began verifying the documents of the security guard. Agrawal said, “The security guard had an arms license and so far, his papers appear to be clean. We are looking into the case in detail and the process to lodge the FIR is ongoing.”

A N Patel, Superintendent Engineer, GETCO, told The Indian Express that the attempted theft had been foiled by the security guards. “We have these incidents where thieves attempt to enter our premises to steal items made of copper and other such materials that are useful for them. Sometimes, they also cut open our devices and connections to commit the theft…,” he said.

“In many cases, the (suspected thieves) are also electrocuted as our connections are always live and working. A similar incident happened in Karjan substation last night and the security personnel foiled the attempt,” Patel said, adding that security guards were deployed at the substation through an outsourcing agency.
