MUMBAI, AUGUST 12: A head constable was sentenced to a year8217;s rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 2,000 for accepting a bribe, by a Special Sessions Court trying Anti-Corruption Cases ACB today.

Special Public Prosecutor Vishwas R Patil said Head Constable, Yesh Digambar Lande, attached to the Social Services Branch SSB of the Mumbai police in 1992, had demanded Rs 200 from the complainant, Anthony, who had accompanied Lande to serve summons in a case filed against Valient Gonsalves by his wife Linda.

According to the prosecution, on March 16, 1992, Anthony, a relative of Linda, had accompanied her to the SSB office at Crawford Market to pick up the summons. En route to Dahisar, where Gonsalves resides, Lande demanded money from Anthony, who had Rs 50 only.

After Lande returned from serving the summons, Anthony borrowed Rs 50 from a friend in Dahisar and then handed over Rs 100 to the constable, who asked Anthony to give him an additional Rs 100 on March 20, 1992. Anthony approached the ACB, and onMarch 20, as the money changed hands, the ACB team caught Lande red-handed.

Special Judge S P Kukday sentenced has Lande to a year8217;s rigorous imprisonment under Sections 7 and 132 read with Section 131d of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. He has also been fined Rs 1,000. Both sentences run concurrently.

In June this year, Senior Police Inspector S Chauhan was sentenced to two years8217; rigorous imprisonment by the same court for amassing wealth disproportionate to his known source of income.
