The Rongjeng bypoll in the East Garo Hills may seem to have put factionalism within the Congress in the backburner, but Chief Minister J D Rymbai is well aware that the respite is only temporary. The bypoll is to be held on December 4 and Rymbai8217;s archrival former chief minister D D Lapang is holding on to his demand of replacing Rymbai.

Lapang8217;s magnanimity of holding back his gun against the CM is not entirely to put up a united face before the bypoll, as is being suggested.

Lapang is just bidding time. If the Congress party fails to clinch the Rongjeng seat in the December 4 bypoll, the party8217;s 8220;failure8221; will be a perfect platter for Lapang to demand Rymbai8217;s ouster. Rymbai is also doing his bit to enhance chances of a win. He made a whirlwind tour of the constituency campaigning for party candidate Mettrison Momin.
