SHIMLA, Nov 4: The Congress Legislature Party CLP today threw its weight behind former chief minister Virbhadra Singh and cautioned the government, especially HVC supremo Sukh Ram, against any attempt to tarnish his image by asking for a CBI probe on the basis of quot;baseless and unsubstantiatedquot; allegations.
In a strong retaliation to Sukh Ram8217;s demand for an immediate CBI probe, 26 Congress legislators issued a signed statement, urging the Prime Minister and the Central government not to allow Sukh Ram or any one else to misuse government apparatus to settle scores with Virbhadra Singh.
The signatures of former chief minister Ram Lal Thakur and former Speaker Vidya Stokes could not be obtained as they were both out of the state. quot; They have always stood up with the party and also stand solidly behind Virbhadra on this issue, quot; senior Congress MLA Singhi Ram said.
The Congress MLAs described the threats being issued to the former chief minister as an quot;act of political blackmail by a person himself involved in serious charges of corruptionquot; and counselled Dhumal that it was high time that Sukh Ram8217;s bluff was called off. quot;Sukh Ram is a power-hungry politician and can never be without office, no matter how lowly it may be and the perks which go with it,quot; the MLAs said.
