A game of musical chairs is on between the Congress and the Samajwadi party on the issue of withdrawal of support to the Mulayam Singh Yadav government in Uttar Pradesh.

‘‘The Congress is not going to withdraw support to my government. Any decision leading to withdrawal of support to my government cannot be of the party president, Sonia Gandhi, but a section of middlemen are trying to create an opposite impression,’’ Yadav said at an election meeting in Rae Bareli today.

While he ruled out the Congress’s withdrawal of support at Rae Bareli, Yadav said just the opposite at another election meeting in Faizabad a few hours before. ‘‘My government will remain intact even if the 14-member Congress group pulls out,’’ he said in Faizabad.

The CM has suddenly adopted a soft approach towards the Congress throughout the day today, raising eyebrows in the state. ‘‘The Congress and also the SP is in a confused state of mind as its leaders have yet to give final shape to the future political line. One day, the SP says that it does not need Congress support but the next day the statement is totally changed. As a result, the voters are left confused,’’ said CPM state secretary Ashok Mishra.
