NEW DELHI, OCT 4: Get back to business, the Election Commission has told the government.

The model code of conduct imposed in the run-up to the general elections will no longer be applicable with the fifth and final phase of the polls to elect the 13th Lok Sabha getting over yesterday.

With only a handful of constituencies yet to go to the polls, and voting completed for the rest of the country and the five State Assemblies, the Commission today said the Government could carry on with its normal business without referring decisions to the EC.

The Commission came out with the order after a reference from the Ministry of Civil Aviation regarding the inauguration of two aero-bridges constructed at Bangalore airport.

“Now that voting is over, the Government may please proceed with its normal business without reference to the Commission,” the order said.

The order has been sent to the Cabinet Secretary.

The model code of conduct came into effect on July 11 with the announcement of the poll schedule for the general elections. The code, which restrains the Centre and state governments from announcing new schemes or inaugurating or laying the foundation stones of any new project is aimed at providing a level-playing field to all contestants in the fray and to negate any undue advantage that a member of a ruling party may have over the opposition.
