VADODARA, June 22: Tension prevailed in the neighbouring Bharuch town on Sunday following clashes between members of two communities, leaving one person injured and an autorickshaw burnt.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bharuch, T M Patil, in a telephonic conversation told Express Newsline that the incident occurred during a cricket match being played by children belonging to one particular community, in the municipal playgrounds on Sunday. A boy, among the audience, of another community got hit by the ball.
When the injured boy and his family members complained to the cricketers saying they were responsible for the injury, the latter allegedly assaulted the boy along with those accompanying him.
They, however, fled when members of Garadia community living nearby rushed to the rescue of the injured boy and his family members.
They, however, returned with more people. Arguments led to clashes, and both groups exchanged stones for about half-an-hour. No one was injured in the clash. Both dispersed when the police arrived on the scene.
However, as news of the clash reached other localities of the town, an old man was stabbed by unidentified miscreants near RTO bridge. He has been admitted to a local hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable, according to doctors attending on him, Patil added.
Special Inspector General of Police, Vadodara range, D D Tuteja, reached the town within a few hours of the incident and held a meeting with District Superintendent of Police Ashsih Bhatia, besides other police officials and discussed the law and order situation.
Patil said eight people involved in the clashes were arrested. The situation though tensed was under control, he added.
