Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, after facing near-certain elimination, staged a comeback win at the Cincinnati Masters today.

Fresh from their Toronto Masters success, the Indians found its rank-outside opponents Frantisek Cermak and Leos Friedl Czech Republic a tough nut to crack before prevailing 6-7 6-8, 7-6 7-4, 7-5 to enter the last eight.

The Indians, winners at Cincinnati in 2001, were up against a team that was playing for the first time. In the first set, they squandered a possible break in the 10th after messing up with three break-points.

Trading serves therafter the game went into the tie breaker. The Indians ran up a 5-1 advantage but it was the Czech duo that took the set. In the second set, howevere, the Czechs returned the compliments to keep the Indians in fray.

The Indians lost track in the third game. At 3-1, the Czechs on serve won the 6th and 8th at love and ran up a 5-3 advantage. But the ninth game saw the Indians stage a comeback. After trailing 0-30 they broke the Czechs in the next game. Having shared 10 games, Mahesh served in the 11th and the Indians won without conceeding a point before putting an end to the Czech misery that lasted two hours and 37 minutes. With this win, the Indian pair has taken their Cincinnati win-loss record to 8-1.
