
United States President Bill Clinton said he hoped Monica Lewinsky would have 8220;a good life8221; and get any help she might need to recover from the traumatic White House sex scandal.
8220;What I hope is that she will be permitted to go on with her life and I hope it will be a good life,8221; Clinton said in response to a question at a White House news conference. 8220;This was a pretty tough thing for everybody involved and I wish her well. I hope it works out all right.8221;
Clinton said he did not watch the first television interview with the 25-year-old former White House intern, which was broadcast in the United States on Wednesday.
The investigation of Lewinsky8217;s relationship with Clinton resulted in his becoming the first elected US President ever impeached.
He was acquitted last month and allowed to remain in office after a month-long impeachment trial in the Senate. Clinton said he hoped that 8220;all the people that have been hurt by this, including totally innocent people will get the help that theyneed8221;.
In another statement, Clinton said the United States was responsible and apologised for the ski-lift tragedy that killed 20 people in Italy last year. In a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Massimo D8217;Alema, Clinton said the United States 8220;is responsible for this terrible disaster,8221; and expressed 8220;great sorrow over what occurred8221;. He said he was 8220;profoundly regretful and apologetic for what has occurred8221;.
