For this painting competition, do not get the whole box of paints 8211; the colours blue and white will do. Non-governmental organisation Concern India Foundation8217;s painting competition for students, amateurs and children has a curious colour code, where only blue and white can be used to paint. The only concession they make for artistic expression is the use of other colours to obtain various shades of blue and white. Professional painters, though, can use all the colours they want to. The competition is part of the organisation8217;s fund-raising activities.

There are plenty of prizes to be won 8211; a package from Thunderbolt for all participants in the kids8217; category and Rs. 5,000 as the first prize in the professional category. The last date for the painting competition is July 3 and entry forms are available at Foundation8217;s office off Nagar Road.

A hindi film without that mandatory rain sequence? Unthinkable. Along with the hero and heroine of a Bollywood potboiler, the generous baarish, with lots of bijli thrown in, play a significant role. Now, the Aashay Film Club pays its own tribute to rain through its two-day audio-visual presentation called Rain In Cinema.

8220;Rain and cinema have a long history, perhaps as old as cinema itself. The presentation will attempt to examine how the subject has been dealt with since the beginning of cinema by film-makers of varying perception,8221; explains the press release. Extracts from films made by Joris Ivens, Orson Welles, Ritwick Ghatak, Satyajit Ray and Akira Kurosawa, among others, have been scheduled for airing.

The presentation, Rain in World Cinema, will be shown on June 28 at 6.30 p.m., while Rain in Indian Cinema, which will cover both Hindi and regional cinema, will be held at the same time on June 29 at the National Film Archive of India NFAI auditorium. The presentation will be conducted by P.K. Nair, former director, NFAI, and the president of the Aashay Film Club. Just the thing to watch on a rainy day!

Stress it out
Swami Parthasarthy, the renowned guru of Vedanta philosophy, whose Vedanta Academy at Malavli has carved a niche for itself in the world of spirituality, will be in Pune shortly for an interesting seminar.

This stress-reduction seminar claims to be unique 8211; on the strength of its analytical approach to the origin of stress. The seminar, titled Reduce Stress Through Self-Management, will be conducted by Swami Parthasarthy himself at the Hotel Blue Diamond on July 10 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The key topics to be discussed are the anatomy of stress, its control through practical ways and stress elimination. Parthasarthy, who gave up a plum corporate job to pursue research in Vedanta philosophy, is extremely articulate, knowledgeable and practical in his approach.
