Checks in city a day after polythene ban

Nearly 480 places were inspected by a team of the UT Administration today. The teams had been constituted to check compliance of the ban on polythene bags by shop keepers across the city. No challans were, however, issued to the defaulters.

The team confiscated a large number of polythene bags from the Kisan Bhawan, where an exhibition was going on and also submitted a report to Deputy Commissioner R K Rao.

Rao said: 8220;The various teams found that there was a 80 per cent compliance with the orders, while in 20 per cent cases, it was being defied. The defaulters will be scrutinised on Monday and challans might be issued against them.8221;

Around 40 teams have been constituted by the Administration to ensure that the ban is adhered by the shop owners across the city.

Members of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal and Chandigarh Industries Association, meanwhile, have requested the Administration to implement the ban after the end of the festive season. MPS Chawla, President, Chandigarh Industries Association, said they hope the Administration will extend the date of the ban, after which, the traders will voluntarily switch to paper bags.

47 fined at Mansa Devi shrine

Nearly Rs 33,000 was collected by the District Administration on Friday as 47 persons at the Mansa Devi Shrine, Panchkula, were issued challans for use of polythene bags in the shrine premises. The violators were charged fines ranging between Rs 500 and Rs 1000 by the authorities. 8220;We surveyed the area around 9.30 am and issued challans to 47 persons,8221; said Rajender Kataria, DC, Panchkula.
