Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today came down heavily on the Centre charging it of trying to put on the back-burner the four-laning of 890 km of state8217;s roads under the National Highway Development Programme NHDP and building of state highways.
Kumar said he would not take the neglect lying down and would call on the Prime Minister if the Centre continued to dilly-dally. 8220;It8217;s a
matter of Bihar8217;s development. I will not keep quiet over the issue. I will meet the Prime Minister if nothing concrete is done in the near future8221;, he said.
The Chief Minister8217;s comments came a day after Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, an RJD MP, attacked the Bihar Government for poor performance in the rural employment guarantee scheme. Pointing fingers at RJD 8212; a coalition partner of the UPA 8212; Kumar alleged that it was being done under its influence. 8220;I feel these projects have been put on the back-burner under the influence of the RJD, which does not want any development to take place in Bihar8221;, he said.
Talking about the 890 km of roads in the state, which were to be four-laned, Kumar said it had been over a year now since the Centre promised to bring a cabinet note and adopt it under NHDP-Phase IIIA.
8220;DPRs are ready but so far nothing has been done. In other states, work under NHDP Phase III has started. I cannot tolerate this neglect8221;, he said and added that soon the state8217;s Road Minister would meet the Union minister concerned over the issue and if no steps were taken then he would himself take up the matter with the PM.
On another front, Kumar wanted to know as to why the two Central agencies 8212; CPWD and IRCON 8212; had not started any work for developing the state highways. Money under the Sam Vikas Yojna was allotted and the two agencies were given the charge of developing the state highways.
8220;But so far they have not yet finalised the tender process. If it is delayed then the money will lapse. In that case, who will take the responsibility?8221; Kumar said.
