Russia has claimed that Ukrainian military tried to attack President Vladimir Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region on Monday and so, Moscow’s negotiating position will now be reviewed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Ukraine attacked Russian president’s state residence on December 28-29 in the Novgorod region with 91 long-range drones which were destroyed by the Russian air defences, Reuters reported. Lavrov further said that no one was injured in the incident and there wasn’t any damage.

Providing further updates about the alleged attack by Ukraine, Lavrov said targets were already shortlisted for retaliatory strikes by the Russian military. “Such reckless actions will not go unanswered,” he said, adding the attack by Kyiv amounts to “state terrorism”.

Highlighting the timing of the attack, Lavrov noted that the reported attack took place during the negotiations for a potential peace deal to halt the war in Ukraine, and that Russia would still remain involved in the discussions but Moscow’s position would be reviewed.

Zelenskyy calls it ‘complete fabrication’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the Russian allegations a “complete fabrication”.

“Russia is at it again, using dangerous statements to undermine all achievements of our shared diplomatic efforts with President Trump’s team. We keep working together to bring peace closer,” he wrote in a post on social media platform X.

“This alleged “residence strike” story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, including Kyiv, as well as Russia’s own refusal to take necessary steps to end the war. Typical Russian lies. Furthermore, the Russians have already targeted Kyiv in the past, including the Cabinet of Ministers building,” he added.
