MUMBAI, FEB 5: The Centre has planned to set up a series of port-based zero-emission petrochemical complexes including one in Maharashtra, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Suresh Prabhu said.

State-of-the-art technology will be used to ensure zero-emission, and the projects will involve foreign direct investment, Prabhu told mediapersons at the party8217;s office Shivalaya at Nariman Point here.

When asked about the location of the project in Maharashtra, he said, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh would have to decide. He said that there would no air pollution as these would be zero-emission petrochemical complex. Maharashtra has a 720-km-long coastline and the state government has to take a final decision about the location of the project.

To start with three projects involving an investment of US dollars eight to nine billion has been planned and later on such projects would be replicated. Since the projects will involve import of crude oil it has been planned near the ports, the Ministersaid.

Prabhu said that United States President Bill Clinton who will be leading a high level delegation to India during March, will give a boost to the economy.
