With political parties mounting pressure on the Election Commission to take action against the BJP for allegedly releasing an anti-Muslim CD, the Nirvachan Sadan today shot off a letter to the State Chief Electoral officer asking him to submit a status report on the FIR filed against the BJP president and its senior leaders.

On the direction of the EC, Chief Electoral Officer A K Bishnoi filed FIRs against senior BJP leaders, including party chief Rajnath Singh, at Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow on April 6 for allegedly releasing a CD containing communally inflammatory material.

The EC also asked Bishnoi to find out whether the police had seized copies of the CD from other parts of UP as well during their investigation and to take action against the offenders if the CD is still being circulated, exhibited or being distributed.

The EC move comes after the Congress8217; Kapil Sibal and CPIM8217;s Nilotpal Basu alleged that the CDs were still being circulated by the saffron parties and demanded that they be seized. The EC, on Thursday, had assured the parties of action on the distribution of the CDs while it postponed the hearing by a week.

The EC directed the police in all districts of the state to ensure that the CD is neither distributed nor exhibited openly or clandestinely. 8220;Anyone caught circulating or exhibiting the CD will be apprehended and legal action will be initiated,8221; an EC official said.
