The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry PE to ascertain the authenticity of a TV news channel8217;s report about a purported conversation between Union Minister Manikrao Gavit and a gangster in Uttar Pradesh.

The agency registered the PE against 8220;unknown persons8221; and seized all tapes of the report from the Noida office of Zee Telefilms Limited for a thorough examination by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, official sources said.

The PE was registered following a direction from the Prime Minister8217;s Office asking the CBI to ascertain whether the voice in the report was that of Gavit, the Minister of State for Home, and to verify the TV channel8217;s claims about his links with criminals in UP.

With the current session of Parliament ending next week, the CBI has been asked to speedily ascertain whether the voice samples were those of Gavit.

If the voice was not of the minister, the CBI will begin a probe into any alleged conspiracy behind the matter and those who hatched it, the sources said, indicating that reporters and other staff may come under the CBI8217;s scanner.

Gavit, now camping in Maharashtra, will come here tomorrow and record his voice samples with CFSL. The agency is expected to submit a report to the government by Thursday, the sources said.
