BANGALORE, SEPT 12: The Central Administrative Tribunal CAT has quashed the appointment of Karawar Superintendent of Police G B Chebbi and Bangalore Deputy Commissioner of Police East, K L Sudheer, who were appointed to the Indian Police Service cadre in March 1998.

Partly allowing a petition filed by Bangalore Deputy Commissioner of Police VVIP Security Syed Ulfat Hussain, the Bangalore CAT bench comprising Justices V Srikantan and S Venkataraman directed the respondents to take steps to fill the vacancies, which arose after January 1, 1998 in accordance with the January 1998 amendment to the IPS Appointment by Selection Regulation Act 1995.

However, the bench rejected the petitioner8217;s prayer to quash the proceedings of the selection committee.

The petition contended that on February 2, 1997, the selection committee had prepared a waiting list of six persons as there were no vacancies of IPS officers for the next year. The list included the names of the two selected officers. However, theamendment came into force on January 1, 1998, which had quashed the provision of preparing a waiting list, the petition contended.
