London, June 29: Sherwin Campbell ensured a thoroughly miserable opening morning for England on the first day of the second Test at the Lord's with an enterprising half-century after West Indies had been put in to bat.At Lunch West Indies, who won the first Test at Edgbaston by an innings and 93 runs, were looking ominous at 79 without loss. Campbell, who scored 59 in West Indies' only innings in the first Test victory at Edgbaston, was on 53 in partnership with Adrian Griffith, who had scored a patient 26.Alec Stewart, substituting for the injured Nasser Hussain as captain, took the initiative after winning the toss and asked West Indies to bat on a straw-coloured pitch under an overcast sky. Campbell looked comfortable from the start, taking five runs off Darren Gough's opening over, then cutting Andy Caddick with ferocious intent to the boundary.Gough was spirited but not threatening and Caddick seemed to be going through the motions as West Indies raced to 31 in even time, helped by some intelligent running between the wickets. After 40 minutes, Stewart introduced debutant Matthew Hoggard from the Pavilion End and the strong Yorkshireman bowled an impressive maiden opening over, beating Campbell with successive balls outside the off-stump.In his second over Hoggard strayed to leg and Campell flicked him through mid-wicket for four, demonstrating again how keen the West Indies were to seize the early advantage.Dominic Cork, recalled to the England side as much for his seven for 43 at the Lord's against West Indies five years ago as any current form, took over from the disappointing Caddick and immediately induced a false stroke from Griffith. Griffith, on 19, sliced his second ball at catchable height but Craig White, diving to his left at third slip, was unable to grasp the chance.Cork was desperately unlucky again when Campbell edged an outswinger of full length to Mike Atherton at first slip. Graeme Hick, diving to his left at second slip, got the tips of his fingers to the ball and diverted it from Atherton's grasp.England's only other real chance of a breakthrough came when Hoggard had a loud appeal for lbw against Griffith turned down when the left-hander padded up to a delivery moving back sharply from just outside the off-stump.Campbell, allowed to indulge in his favourite back foot shots, reached his 15th Test 50 half an hour from lunch with eight fours from just 72 deliveries, and already West Indies were taking a grip on a Test England need to win to square the series.
