Inept planning and inadequate procurement of sophisticated weapons are hampering the modernisation of police force in Andhra Pradesh, according to the Comptroller and Auditor-General CAG.

Modernisation of weaponry has not been achieved and some police stations in Naxal-affected areas continue to depend on outdated weapons, the report said.

Given the magnitude of the extremist activity in the state, the requirement of AK 47, 7.62mm Self-Loaded Rifles SLR, 9mm carbines and 5.56mm Insas for police stations were projected in the perspective plan to improve the striking capability of the police force, the report tabled in the state Assembly on Tuesday said.

However, despite sanctioning Rs 45.71 crore to purchase sophisticated weapons during 2002-07, most of the police stations in the Naxal-infested districts continue to depend on outdated weapons like .410 muskets and .303 rifles, with the majority of weapons being kept in district headquarters.

Some weapons were procured only during 2005-07, the report said.

DGP S S P Yadav had recently admitted that Naxal threat had not been completely wiped out.
