Indian wrestlers put up an uneven display in the free style events here today. Commonwealth games gold medallist Palwinder Cheema (120 kg) and silver medallist Anju Kumar (84 kg) lost their first round bouts and Kripa Shankar Patel (55 kg) fell by the way side. Pawan Kumar (66 kg) lost his quarter-final bout to North Korea’s Hwang Po-Song 3-1 after giving a good account of himself in two earlier rounds. He beat Alan Niyazmengliev of Turkmenistan 3-1 in first round and then took the measure of China’s Ci Liang 3-1 in the next round. Palwinder Cheema met with a setback in the morning against Arturtaymazov of Uzbekistan but came back strongly to record three successive victories on the day. Asian champion Cheema defeated Nurberdy Hekimov of Turkmenistan by fall in the second round and proved too good for Mongolia’s Geleg Jamts Usukhbayar in the third.
Shooters go blank again
Continuing their dismal run, Indian shooters failed to bag any medal for the third successive day. The Indian team of Anjali Bhagwat, Deepali Deshpande Andkuheli Gangulee finished a poor seventh in the women’s 50m rifle three position team event with a total of 1701 points as the strong Chinese shooters continued to rule the roost picking up most of the gold medals on offer. Anjali returned with a rather poor score of 569, Deepali and Kuheli managed 574 and 558. The gold medal in the event was expectedly claimed by the Chinese trio of Li Du, Xian Wang and Hong Shan who had an aggregate of 1754 to not only establish a new Asian Games record but also equal the world record.
Harpal wins, Bahadur out
Heavyweight pugilist Harpal Singh became the third Indian to move into the quarter-finals. Displaying excellent technique and agility, Harpal kept his medal hopes alive beating Lebanon’s Mansour Ali 20-16 in a keenly contested the 91 plus category bout at the Masan Gymnasium. But Commonwealth Games silver medallist Som Bahadur Pun stumbled at the first hurdle. Pun started on a promising note but could not maintain the rhythm to go down to China’s Tongzhou Chen 14-29 without posing much of a challenge in the feather weight (57 kg) category.
