PUNE, Sept 28: A civic proposal to make a provision for a burial ground and a crematorium near Maheshnagar and Atlas Copco Colony in Pimpri has drawn flak from citizens and a section of corporators.
Opposition leader of the Shiv Sena Sulabha Ubale has demanded immediate scrapping of the proposal, saying there is no need for either a burial ground or a crematorium in the area. In a letter submitted to Municipal Commissioner Ganesh Thakur, Ubale said the densely-populated areas of Sant Tukaramnagar, Maheshnagar, Atlas Copco Colony and H.A. Colony were provided civic amenities as per the development plan. She charged that the proposal was being forced through because of pressure by local corporators.
People in the area, Ubale said, had already begun submitting objections to the proposal because it would pollute the area and create disturbance. She said the PCMC had already constructed 31 crematoria and there was no need for one more. A burial ground has already been provided at survey number 256 near Pimpri Colony which was away from the residential locality, she added.
