NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 25: The presentation of the annual Budget, which traditionally takes place on on the last day of February, may be delayed by a few days if a proposal before the government is given the go-ahead.

The annual Budget, as has become the convention, is placed before Parliament on the last day of February. But all this could change. While presenting the Budget for the year 1999-2000 in February this year, the BJP-led government had done away with the practice of presenting it at 5 pm and, instead, did it at noon.

“There is nothing sacrosanct about the Budget being presented on the last day of February,” Union Minister Pramod Mahajan told reporters this afternoon. “We’ve to see whether any budgetary proposal comes into force on March 1. If it is indeed so, then the Budget will have to be presented as per schedule. But if all provisions come into force on April 1, then the Budget may be placed before Parliament sometime in March” the Parliamentary Affairs Minister said.

The Budget session commences in the last week of February with a presidential address to a joint session of the two Houses.
