In order to give an impetus to the ongoing defence relationship between the countries, British Army Chief General Sir Richard Dannatt will visit India next week and meet the top military brass to discuss future areas of cooperation.

Dannatt, who will arrive on October 29 for a six-day visit, will meet Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor and is also expected to call upon the Defence Minister. He will be visiting forward field formations of the strategic Northern Command and the newly formed South Western Command. Sources say visits to Srinagar, Jaipur and Agra would figure in his itinerary.

India and the UK have recently stepped up defence ties after a relative cooling off in the past few decades. Dannatt is reciprocating General J J Singh’s visit in June and will discuss the prospects of future military cooperation with India. The first military exercise was conducted between the two armies last month at a high altitude base near Leh where UK Royal Marines trained with Indian paratroopers.
