
MUMBAI, SEPT 14: A junior engineer attached to the building department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC was sentenced to imprisonment by the sessions court for demanding a bribe from a policeman.
Judge Mrudula Bhatkar sentenced Kundan Moreshwar Patil to three years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000. In 1990, police constable Suryakant Dharmaji Mahangare, then attached to Sakinaka police station, and his relatives had illegally constructed rooms at Tunga village, Andheri east. Patil, attached to the building department, L8217; ward, Kurla, visited the site and demanded Rs 17,000 from Mahangare for not demolishing the structures.
Patil allegedly repeatedly demanded bribes from Mahangare between August and December 1990, but Mahangare managed to buy time by deferring payment. Finally, Patil visited the Sakinaka police station and left a message for Mahangare to pay up at the earliest.
According to inspector Vilas Tupe, the Anti Corruption Bureau ACB was tipped off, and a squadcaught Patil accepting Rs 5,000 through his labourers on December 5, 1990. Special Public Prosecutor M N Kandalkar appeared for the state.
In another case, a metropolitian magistrate remanded a Sri Lankan national to police custody for smuggling foreign currency worth Rs 14 lakh out of the country.
Acting on a tip-off, officers of the Air Intelligence of Mumbai, customs, searched Dhandvati Jayvandene at Sahar airport as she was about to board a flight to Colombo on Sunday night. A body search led the police to the currency. She has been remanded to custody till September 24.
