MUMBAI, May 28: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation blacklisted a contractor on Tuesday for failing to desilt drains in Chembur before the deadline.
Mayor Nandu Satam and his deputy Gopal Shetty found during their surprise visits that Nandkumar and Co., who were awarded the contract to desilt drains and nullahs in the north-eastern suburb, had failed to complete desilting work on Vaibhav Nagar
nullah. The BMC chief has been carrying out surprise visits almost every day as only 50 per cent of the cleaning work was over in the last six weeks.
Admitting the backlog, Shetty however could not pinpoint any particular reason for the delay. He reasoned that it was not possible to undertake the process of desilting all the drains together and said, 8220;If we carry out the desilting much in advance, they will be clogged by the time the monsoon arrives.8221;
Satam has asked the work to be carried out on a war footing and instructed that manpower from other departments also be roped in to complete the work intime. Stating that with inadequate manpower, the drains, especially in slums localities, were full, and that it was not possible to clean them manually Shetty explained, 8220;We have limited number of machines and hence we cannot carry out work in all the drains at one time.8221;
