Expressing concern over Kathmandu giving up its Hindu identity, the BJP on Thursday favoured continuation of constitutional monarchy in Nepal.
BJP president Rajnath Singh, who met visiting Nepalese Prime Minister G P Koirala, told reporters that ‘‘along with the growth of democracy, constitutional monarchy should be continued in Nepal.’’ ‘‘It is an integral part of the tradition and culture of that country,’’ he added.
The BJP chief said, ‘‘We have conveyed our concern over Nepal’s decision to become a secular nation to Prime Minister Koirala. We have requested him to ensure that the unique cultural and social identity of Nepal is preserved.’’
A BJP release quoted Koirala having told Rajnath Singh that Nepal was secular in its approach even while it was a Hindu Kingdom. Koirala, according to the release, said Hindu values would continue to guide people of Nepal. The BJP chief said Maoists must give up arms and join the ongoing democratic process. He said, ‘‘I told the Prime minister that BJP would like the Maoists to contest elections and play a positive role in Nepal’s rebuilding.’’
