AHMEDABAD, Nov 15: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is working out a model code of conduct for its elected representatives to ensure control over airing of `damaging views’ in public.
State BJP president Rajendra Singh Rana said a high-level committee of members drawn from the State unit executive body and legislative wing had been formed to discuss and formulate a set of rules for party MLAs. He said this was necessary in view of the recent incidents wherein senior ministers and MLAs were found grumbling against the government on important policy matters and approaching the media without prior consultation with the party.
He said that anyone in the party can express views within the party fora but, still, care must be taken so that details of that are not leaked out to the media tarnishing the party’s image. He said that being part of the ruling party, every MLA and minister should uphold ethos of discipline and exercise restraint in expressing their views.
Rana admitted that at least two leaders, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Jaspal Singh and Sabarmati MLA Yatin Oza were found guilty of indirectly criticising the government and that "they were reprimanded" for violating norms of party discipline and warned by party leadership against repeating such improper and objectional conduct in future.
However, Jaspal Singh denied that he was summoned by any leader or was reprimanded. "I have not met anybody in this connection and I do not want to comment on this," he said. He saw nothing wrong in the party setting up norms for elected representatives.
Earlier, Singh had written to the Chief Minister stating his displeasure over official policy on movement of groundnut oil and seeds. But the contents of the letter reached the media. In another case, Yatin Oza had sought to criticise the government and went to the press demanding stringent action against two senior police officers. Peeved at this, the State leaders summoned the two and asked them to behave, Rana admitted.
